Using signposts in Writing Economic Essays

November 30th, 2009

Signposts are used in essays to give emphasis on the main topic of every paragraph. Signposts are used to give readers the general outline of an essay and the ideas that make up the entire piece. Normally, when you make economic essays, you simply divide the paragraphs by idea.

On a certain cases, however, that the use of signposts is recommended. Examples of signposts are: number (1,2,3) and number words (first, second, third). These signposts are used to mark the ideas, prioritise and sequence them in a logical manner. When writing economic essays, it is good to use signposts for the different points that you want your reader to pay attention to. There are several ways to do it; and some are not new to you. One way is to employ signposts in the middle paragraphs of your economic essay to enumerate the ideas that you have about the certain subject. On the other hand, you can use numbers to enumerate ideas found in a paragraph of your economic essay; this way, the ideas would be able to stand out especially if you want to derive another point from these ideas.

There are a lot of signposts you can make use of in a single economic essay, however, you must be mindful with how you employ these signposts in the different areas of your economic essay so as not to create confusion within the essay. The common mistake when using signposts is in using number words to sequence paragraphs and using the same signpost type to sequence your sentences within the paragraph; there is a big tendency that the readers will spend a little more time understanding your economic essay.

The economic essay itself is sometimes difficult to read since it calls upon technical terms. Your main goal as a writer is to make your economic essay understandable and digestible to your readers. In this way, you can use signposts to enumerate your technical terms while explaining them well. At the same time, it is less likely that you will miss important key points when using signposts.

The strength of your economic essay depends upon the cohesiveness of the entire piece. Signposts are, without a doubt, helpful in organising your ideas in the economic essay the way you want it to be.

Well-composed essays must be consistent in its purpose all throughout the essay. If your readers lose interest when reading your essay, then consider your work mediocre. Good essays require you to make the proper approach in writing your essay. In the case of writing economic essays, it is also your responsibility to maintain the interest of your readers all throughout your essay.

Normally, custom written essays, like economic essays, must be written not just to inform. It is also your duty to make your presentation understandable to the readers. Writing economic essays may require you to write technical economic terms; if this happens, you must be able to give clear explanations about everything. Hence, the middle paragraphs usually carry the weight of your detailed explanations in the economic essays.

One way to organize your thoughts and give detailed explanations in the middle paragraphs of your economic essay is to use inter-paragraph transitions. Here are the different kinds of inter-paragraph transitions that you can use in your economic essay:

  • The summarising transition is used when you want to tackle another topic in the next paragraph since you are already summarising the key points in the current paragraph
  • The repetitive transition is used when you want to repeat your key words from one paragraph in another paragraph just to give emphasis to these key words in your economic essay
  • The question-and-answer transition is used when you want to answer the question in your previous paragraph; this is a good way of continuing your points from the previous paragraph yet creating another paragraph just to cut the length of the previous one.
  • Logical transitions are highly noticeable since there are indications or words used like however, on the other hand, in the contrary, etc. found in the beginning sentence of the next paragraph.

Lastly, inter-paragraph transitions are conventional ways of linking your paragraphs with one another. This will make your economic essay continuous in form. Unfortunately, when using inter-paragraph transitions, you must be able to establish your key ideas in each paragraph.

November 27th, 2009

There are a thousand and one ways in making essays; but the process of writing essays is not that easy – especially when the essay must cover a certain subject or discipline and not just in its free and raw form. An essay covering a certain discipline is already a part of academic essay writing. Thus, a professional tone in writing must be used. In this case, we will talk about economic essays.

What then, is the best way to make excellent economic essays?

The best way to create an economic essay is to write or phrase the essay according to your personality. One very common communications theory is the theory of individual differences which states that individuals possess a variation of characteristics which make them unique. Ergo, it means that every individual approaches a task differently. This is true for the task of writing essays. Different angles or perspectives are seen in different individuals. The best style of essay writing is what is comfortable to you – and that is your own style.

Second, creating an excellent economic essay means having an excellent understanding of what is being asked. Now that you know that you can be confident with your own style of writing an essay, you must be able to incorporate your ideas well into the essay by knowing what you are going to write. This means that you have to understand the subject matter very well. Ask the professor who assigned the task if you have any clarifications regarding the essay question. Also, research more on facts that support your ideas; it helps in establishing your arguments, making your statements more valid and credible.

Third, be critical and know your approach. Economics is a social science. In writing economic essays, other social sciences (e.g. Politics, culture, society, and environment) that affect economics must be considered. In this case, a proper angle or approach is necessary to establish the area of economics you are going to tackle. Clarity of thought is determined by your approach.  To have more ideas, the book entitled: 100 essay plans for economics is available online for your reference.

Fourth, clearly define your terms. There are different economic terms that are also used as layman’s terms. If such is the case, you should clearly define your term if you want the general readers to understand your economic essay.

Lastly, the best time to start writing an economic essay is now.

Extracting Economic Topics using Brainstorming Method

November 24th, 2009

The subject matter of economic essays entails broad areas of involvement or scope. Subject matters refer to the essay question or central theme itself. The challenge for any writer is the difficulty to start simply because you cannot distinguish which among the ideas that you have can be put first; some even do not have any established idea about the subject matter. In writing custom essays such as economic essays, it requires precise ideas that are also supported by established economic facts, principles or evidences.

The subject matter in economic essays must be well explored and scrutinized to create topics relevant to the subject matter. One way to explore the topics about the subject matter is to use the brainstorming method. Brainstorming allows you to jot down all ideas that you think are relevant to the subject matter. In this process, ideas that you think are foolish may arise, but never discriminate against them. Remember that your economic essay relies on well constructed and wise ideas, but you will never know what wise ideas are if you have not encountered foolish ones also.

Brainstorming all possible ideas can lead you to several different approaches for the essay. After you brainstormed all possible answers to the subject matter, you must be able to reject ideas that lack substantial economic evidences or proofs. Another way of filtering ideas is to know the outcome or the conclusion that you want to arrive at in your economic essay. This way, you can streamline your thoughts into creating a powerful and well-supported economic essay conclusion.

The key ideas that you have identified form the rudiments of your economic essay. This will become the topics in your economic essay. You must be able to discuss the topics well so that you can form a good conclusion at the end. Research and include economic principles and concepts to support the contentions of your economic topics.

Once you are done writing your economic essay, you must be able to benchmark your economic essay against other professional-standard economic essay samples. You can also avail of online economic essay writing services to help you edit your work. This way, you can benchmark your work based on how professional economic writers do it. There is nothing wrong in wanting to ingest some perspective in writing economic essays especially when it relates to the professional way of writing.

Making Interesting Essays

November 5th, 2009

There are several ways to make interesting essays. Here are a few tips you can make use of when writing essays:

  • Find an interesting topic. This is probably the best way to make your essay stand out. An interesting topic, if handled well, can make for an interesting piece.
  • Use up-to-date data. Essay writing requires a lot of research, so it is important to make use of information that is relevant and current. Most of the data you have will be used to support your thesis. One thing that can make your essay weak is the use of dated information, so you have to ensure that your data is current and relevant.
  • Do something to grab the reader’s interest. Quote a famous person or start off with some lines from a poem or a song. Popular culture is a great source of attention-grabbing lines. Try to incorporate something out of the ordinary into your essay.
  • Use images and graphs. This will also make things more interesting for the reader.

There are a lot more things you can do to grab the reader’s attention, however, the application of these methods is not enough. You need to have a well-written, coherent essay to be able to keep the reader’s attention. So, apart from making your essay interesting, make sure it is easy to understand and logical as well.
