- Nominal Definition
Nominal definition is used to define terms or words based on the dictionary or other references. In economics essay, you use this definition if you want to quote references from valid sources.

- Real definition
Real definition is used to define terms or words based on actual experiences of the situation or the term. In economics essay, this is oftentimes the writer’s definition of the word.
Example:
Economics talks about how to manage resources and how to get maximum output with minimum input.
In the examples above, the definitions are different since one tackles what the word economics is all about while the other talks about the writer’s experience of what the word means to him. Thus, a real definition embodies the writer’s observance of how the word is applied into the real world setting.
