3 Common Mistakes in Writing Economics Essays

February 9th, 2010

Having a dynamic writing style is often the make or break reason why your economics essay is either worth reading or is worth forgetting. In the essay writing craft, writing styles are developed to present your ideas creatively. There are many writing styles that are used today. Functionally, writing styles make your essay an effective tool for communication. In particular, there is no definite writing style that is effective for economics essays. Writing economics essays may involve many writing styles just in one composition.

Although there are many writing styles that you can use, there are common characteristics that all writing styles have. These characteristics are also the common mistakes in writing economics essays, to wit:

  • The use of tautology

Tautology is a type of word repetition that emphasises the meaning of the words. A few examples of tautology are: investment asset, stock reserves, guaranty deposit, and so on. Tautology is a playful use of words and this will make your economics essay less serious, except, perhaps if the phrase is already an established economic term. If you do not maintain a serious tone in your economics essay, your ideas are less believable. However, it does not mean that if you do not use tautologies in your economics essay you cannot anymore put any form of humour in it. Without using tautologies, you can still place humour in your economics essay whenever appropriate; it only depends on the your skillfulness being the writer.

  • Prefer action verbs and active voice

There is nothing more amazing than the use of action verbs and the active voice. The active voice places prominence on the subjects of the sentences thus, will make your economics essay more compelling to read. Action verbs also animate your thoughts in the economics essay. Readers can easily imagine the thoughts you present in the economics essay with the use of active verbs.

  • Foreign words and phrases

Economics essays are sometimes full of foreign words and phrases. The presence of foreign words and phrases in your economics essay may make your essay look more intellectual to some, but it will also lessen the readability of your economics essay. In this case, you are putting the most important factor of effective communication in jeopardy: you should never compromise the readability of your economics essay with the improper usage of foreign words. You can only use foreign words if these have no English counterparts.

Some writers make the mistake of letting their economics essay sound too scholarly or theoretical. This should not be the case if you want to establish effective communication to your readers especially that you are dealing with economics essays.

Writing with Continuity

January 24th, 2010

Continuity of ideas is important in economics essays in order to maintain readers’ interest. The attention span of readers for economics essays is too minimal to be left to pure chance. The advantage of idea continuity is that it creates smooth transition of thoughts in the economic essay so that readers can easily follow the lines of thought in the essay.

The technique in writing continuous ideas is using lesser punctuations especially the minimal use of periods (.) in a single paragraph. The use of conjunctions is more preferable in writing economics essays to ensure the continuity of ideas. However, writing economics essays with continuous ideas does not end by merely writing with lesser punctuations. You also need a writing style that is appropriate in writing continuous ideas.

The cumulative writing style is the best style to use in writing a good economics essay. This style requires the use of an independent clause followed by several subordinate clauses that give detailed explanation and description of the main subject found in the independent clause. This writing style can also be expressed by using dashes in separating the independent clause with its subordinates. Take the example below:

Crisis and economic rivalries, national interest and its impact, economic clashes and reconciliation, fair trade or free trade, economic pursuits rewarded or unrewarded; lawfulness versus violations – these are among the daily economic matters in our country.

The example clearly shows the continuity of ideas. Economic matters is the subject in the example while the terms before the dash state the subordinates of the main idea. This writing style clearly illustrates how it can be well utilized in the economics essay. Furthermore, this writing style can add detailed explanation of generalised thoughts in the economics essay.

The cumulative writing style possesses an advantageous position in writing continuous ideas for the economics essay. However, this writing style cannot be used in the economics essay in order to create emphasis on critical points since the nature of this writing style is continuously descriptive and associative.

Therefore, there must be several writing styles that you must use in your economics essay. Variations in writing style add a sense of vigor and zest to the thoughts presented in the economics essay. In sum, idea continuity and style variations are two important elements for an excellently written economics essay.

Writing Clear and Excellent Thoughts

December 30th, 2009

The foundation of a good essay writing material is the systematic organisation of thoughts. Every development starts from a single idea or thought. In essay writing, the development of good written communications is founded on established thoughts. Thus, the thoughts should be clearly defined to shape up the purpose of writing essays.

Definitions are important factors that add form and structure to your essay. In particular, writers for economics essays use definitions to outline ideas and established thoughts. Without any concrete definition in the economics essay, it becomes nebulous and confusing. Hence, the definition can clearly produce the scope and limitation of your ideas in the economics essay. For example, the word trade as a subject for an economics essay has multiple dimensions, angles and perspectives. You cannot write all the ideas about trade in your economics essay, instead you only pick out those ideas that are relevant to your writing style. Thus, make definitions to your subject for you to streamline the flow of your ideas in the essay.

In a sense, the use of definitions can be complicated. While it is true that the use of definitions can streamline your essay, using it is another challenge. Definitions depend on the different purpose and means of writing it in the essay. Here are the two types of definitions you can write in an essay:

  • Nominal Definition

Nominal definition is used to define terms or words based on the dictionary or other references. In economics essay, you use this definition if you want to quote references from valid sources.

Example:

Economics talks about the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, and with the theory and management of economies or economic systems. (from thefreedictionary.com)

  • Real definition

Real definition is used to define terms or words based on actual experiences of the situation or the term. In economics essay, this is oftentimes the writer’s definition of the word.

Example:

Economics talks about how to manage resources and how to get maximum output with minimum input.

In the examples above, the definitions are different since one tackles what the word economics is all about while the other talks about the writer’s experience of what the word means to him. Thus, a real definition embodies the writer’s observance of how the word is applied into the real world setting.

The Persona in Economic Essays

Approaching the Right Way

The Persona in Economic Essays

December 9th, 2009

What have you noticed when reading economic essays from other writers? What are their similarities and differences? There are a lot of similarities among economic essays, especially when they refer to the same field of specialty, subject matter or essay question. On the other hand, no matter how similar these economic essays are, they can still be individually distinguished in terms of their respective author’s writing style and content.

All essays have that distinctive personal touch of their authors. It is impossible to separate the essay and the author. In the writing discipline, this personal touch is called the persona of the essay. Essays having unique personas clarify and define the purpose and nature of the author. Persona comes from a Latin word which means actor’s mask. When establishing the persona in your economic essay, it does not mean that you have to be consistent with your mood all throughout the essay. What you must be consistent about is your mood towards the subject matter and the different situations you presented in the economic essay. If you specify a situation that warrants you to be authoritative in your tone, then be it. If you are presented with another situation that requires personal statements or analyses from the gathered statistical data, then present it. The persona adds variety to your economic essay.

When writing economic essays, the same holds true that the writer’s nature and characteristic is also made known in the essay. Thus, as a writer, you must look at the presence of your persona in your economic essay. Is your persona consistent with your character or are you just pretending?

As a writer, it is always ethical to be true to your readers. Your economic essays must reflect who and what you are as a person. If you have a position or stand to establish in your economic essay, you must be able to define your personality well so that readers will believe you. The moment they see incoherent thoughts or cluttered ideas in your economic essay, this is a mark of inconsistency that you must avoid to retain your readers.

Thus, as a writer, you must evaluate if the economic essay is appropriate and authentic. The economic essay becomes authentic when the readers are able to grasp and understand your purpose in writing the economic essay. On the other hand, it becomes appropriate when you are able to meet the purpose and intention of your economic essay.
